Nelson Unearths Story by Goodnight Moon Author

Thomas Nelson has acquired an unpublished manuscript by renowned children's book author Margaret Wise Brown. After Brown's death in 1952, a sheaf of yellowed pages held together by paper clips had languished for 30 years in a cedar chest in her sister's attic. Among these undiscovered stories was The Moon Shines Down—based on the classic New England Sampler prayer God Bless the Moon and God Bless Me—which Nelson will publish this November.
Laura Minchew, children's publisher for Thomas Nelson, said, "I had known for a long time there were stories out there that Brown had not published or finished in her lifetime. Last year I was talking to Amy Gary of Watermark about our favorite authors, and I mentioned I didn't think a children's book got any better than Goodnight Moon." It happened that Gary held the rights to license The Moon Shines Down, and Minchew acquired the book this past fall.

The Moon Shines Down will be illustrated by Linda Bleck in a style similar to that of Clement Hurd, who illustrated some of Brown's best-known works. "It's a little more colorful and detailed, but it will look and feel familiar to Brown's readers," Minchew said. —Lynn Garrett

This year it was an honor to be asked to illustrate the the Margaret Wise Brown book The Moon Shines Down. This spring I completed the artwork and it will be due out this Christmas season. The book focuses on a koala bear character traveling through the world. "God bless the moon and god bless me", says little bear.

PreS-Gr 3–In this takeoff on Aesop’s fable, city-dweller Jack can’t wait to visit his cousin Adam in the ’burbs. Once there, the boys enjoy bicycling through the neighborhood, fishing, shopping, watching a movie, buying ice cream, and sleeping outside. But Jack begins to miss the city and is happy to get back home. Turn the book over and it’s Adam’s chance to visit Jack’s apartment where the boys repeat the same adventures in the same order with the flavor and sounds of an urban environment thrown in. In the end, Adam decides that his favorite place is home as well. The author and illustrator do a great job of showing how a slightly different perspective still yields the same fun for the boys. The full-color, slightly flattened, retro cartoon illustrations “using gouache and at least 10 brushes” perfectly capture the changing scenes, and readers will agree that it’s tough to decide which experience–city or suburb–is more fun.–Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, WI

Gr 2-5–Pfeffer combines basic science with cultural traditions and celebrations to describe this seasonal event. A simple explanation and equally clear graphics serve to contrast the light of summer solstice with the darkness of winter solstice and also to demonstrate the fact that both the vernal and autumnal equinoxes occur when day and night are of equal length. Bleck’s cheerful cartoon illustrations are well matched to the text and sport suitably bright hues. Springtime festivities within Chinese, Persian, Indian, and Mayan cultures are explored, with reference to ancient mythology and architectural structures. The significance of special holiday foods is also discussed, including pancakes for the Russian celebration of Maslenitsa, fresh berries for the Cree Native Americans, the symbolic seder plate for Jews at Passover, and eggs for Easter. The back of the book offers a craft activity or recipe for each holiday mentioned.
