St. Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland. He was brought
to Ireland at the age of 16 as a slave
and lived there for six years before escaping
and returning to his family.
After he became a cleric, he returned to Ireland. He brought
Christianity and monasticism to Ireland in the form of more than 300 churches
and over 100,000 Irish baptised.
The lack of snakes in Irleland gave rise to the legend of
St. Patrick banishing them from Ireland.
It was said that he chased them into the sea after they attacked him during a 40 day fast. It has been suggested that the imagery of snakes referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids.
